Yes but since then I've been watching the 7u-osx updates and seeing 
bunches of bugs filed, and so was left wondering exactly what state the 
OSX "port" is in on the hotspot side. Or for that matter on the JDK side 
as the hotspot build has to be placed into an OSX JDK.

As long as the code builds and passes the tests for 7 and 8 then that 
should be fine - and Jim indicates that is the case.
