Use of STABS debug format

I filed the following two bugs:

    7188168 4/4 7071904 broke the DEBUG_BINARIES option on Linux

    7188173 4/4 RFE: consider switching from STABS to DWARF on linux-x86
                (32-bit)

They should appear publicly in the next day or so...
