RFR (S): 8042059: Various fixes to linux/sparc

Please review the following set of minor changes which are needed to get 
the linux/sparc platform to build and run[1]. The changes are relatively 
straightforward so I'm not explaining them more in detail here, but 
please ask if there's anything in there which is unclear.
