[8u] backport of 8066775: opto/node.hpp:355, assert(i < _max) failed: oob: i=1, _max=1

8u backport request. 8066775 was pushed to jdk9 on tuesday and it hasn’t caused any new failures during nightly testing. The change doesn’t apply cleanly to 8u (the change needs to be applied to connode.cpp instead of castnode.cpp but it is otherwise identical).
