Running modified hotspot

Hi

I am new to hotspot development, but posting this question as I couldn’t solve my problem with existing material.
I have built openjdk8 on a linux system. If I change something in the hotspot source (e.g., printing something), from where should I check the changed outputs. I don’t want to re-build the complete jdk again.
At this point, I tried going inside "hotspot/make" and ran “make debug”. From where am I supposed to run “java” and “java” so that I can see the changes in effect. I am not able to find “gamma”, which used to be in openjdk7.
