RFR: 8337975: [BACKOUT] Native memory leak when not recording any events

Fix for [JDK-8335121](https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8335121) introduced regressions when running with -ea and -esa.

Change needs to be backed out during troubleshooting.
