Matthias,

Can't we just read /proc/version ?

e.g.:

Linux version 2.6.25-14.fc9.x86_64 (mockbuild@) (gcc version 4.3.0
20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Thu May 1 06:06:21 EDT 2008

Linux version 2.6.38.2 (root at yoda) (gcc version 4.3.4 (Gentoo 4.3.4
p1.0, pie-10.1.5) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Apr 16 00:19:00 MSD 20
