review request (S/M): embedded -> open changes

A handful of moving from closed to open source; most relate to
embedded builds.  They've already been reviewed within Oracle
(necessary before exposing them), but additional feedback is welcome.
The first is trivial (just adds some includes); I'm going to push it
shortly.
