Yeah. All this makes me very nervous. This is the kind of wholesale
reorganization that would normally be inappropriate in a backport. I
do appreciate that this is your second attempt at making something
appropriate, but it's difficult.

I note that Oracle has not backported this to 11, and presumably has
had to work around the JDK-8216039 problem in some other way.
