In that case: maintainers, what's your sense of whether 8256488 and 8257436 backports would be approved? The two patches apply cleanly net of copyright date and context.

I think we should only downport this change together with JDK-8257436
and JDK-8256488 which fix some regressions for the SIMD case.

I've put a corresponding comment into JDK-8255351 and linked the two
issues there (sorry, should have done this earlier).
