By way of putting my money where my mouth is, I'd be happy to handle extra overhead of backporting 8261660 and of pushing the 8261649 and 8261660 backports together. 8261660 was reverted by 8261649, there's no separate reversion issue.

Thanks, I won't! Doing so would have required you to *approve
a patch you knew to be broken*, which I don't think I've ever
done. And srsly, I don't want to start now. :-)
