IMO, we need to backport it to make sure that we write out (mostly diagnostic info?) completely. But there is indeed a followup ([JDK-8316468](https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8316468)), which suggests there might be more surprises if we go down this path. I would say we need to wait a little (say a month) before we pick it up for 17u.
