Yes, I agree that would be nicer (please include the whole version in
that case, so you can easily unpack different versions in the same dir).
But please do give a little warning, I, and I assume others, have
various scripts now that depend on the current layout. And even on the
naming of the current tar.gz files - the change from underscores to
dashes broke some stuff in the past for example - don't you love
unintentional interfaces :)

Also please do publish the MD5 sums for the tar.gz files. Currently we
have the strange situation that there are no published .zip files (as
far as I can see on http://download.java.net/openjdk/jdk6/) but the
checksums file contains MD5 sums for the zip files (not the
published .tar.gz files).
