For a more immediate solution, I suggest you look at using the latest IcedTea
release, as all the GNU/Linux distributions do:

It has the latest security fixes and many backports from OpenJDK 7 that also
went into the proprietary Oracle release of 6 but haven't yet made it into
OpenJDK 6.
