There have been some thoughts and effort put into enabling someone else 
to lead the Project eventually.

I submitted a session on that for the FOSDEM Java devroom [0], but 
considering that it wasn't picked up, I don't think it's a very exciting 
subject outside the jdk7u-dev mailing list.

I'll have other [1], even more interesting things to talk about at 
FOSDEM, but if you see me in the Java devroom or at the MySQL stand, I'd 
be happy to chat.
