[8u] Request for approval and review: 8157181, 8160551, and 8171155

please approve (and review in case of 8157181) the following backports 
to 8u:

8160551 and 8171155 cleanly apply to 8u.

As suggested by John Rose in a comment for 8159215, only a part of the 
8157181 fix for 9 is backported to 8u. As a result, the backport of 
8157181 does not apply cleanly to 8u (thus the review request). Here is 
the webrev for that change:

I tested the three changes combined with JPRT, all tests pass.
