This is a clean backport, plus regenerating 
common/autoconf/generated-configure.sh.

8034199 implies we need its follow-on bug 8035904: there was a build 
failure on machines with older bash versions, so a comparison with =~ 
was rewritten to use grep.  This problem still relevant for at least 
some of our Solaris builds.

Hence this is also a request for approval for:

8035904: Solaris fastdebug builds are failing
