Please approve the backport of the following two fixes from JDK 9 to 8u-dev:

Both changes apply cleanly to 8u-dev. JPRT run and hotspot testset 
passes with current compilers. Efficacy of fix manually confirmed by 
building with SS 12.4 (C++ 5.13).
