I am unable to reproduce the crash on macOS 10.14 with 8u-dev (with
8214578 applied) with muCommander 0.9.3 changing from US to Romaji
multiple times.

Unfortunately, no.

Besides 8248532 I can see 8257242 (that is also backported to 15, 13
and 11). I've checked that it can be applied to 8u, just it also
depends on a header change from 8234786. I assume 8257242 should go
into 8u too if 8214578 is approved.

PS: if someone with a deep knowledge in this area thinks that 8214578
is too dangerous for 8u, it may be better to explicitly mark it with
"8u-rejected" or something similar.
