Agreed, it's perfectly possible that even binutils results in backwards 
compatibility concerns.

The downside is that it precludes the use of newer language features, 
but I'm not sure if that matters for Hotspot because even if all the 
official baseline compilers support a reasonable subset of C++11, 
OpenJDK as a whole is still expected to build with older compilers, right?
