It looks like the banner in your picture is scaled up, leading to visual artifacts. How about instead narrowing the space reserved for the banner? Regarding testing the banner on your machine, I guess you could create a temporary banner picture where you cut out a lot of the stuff in the middle, just whilst trying things out and getting the background color right.
