What you consider to be an obvious extension is not necessarily an 
obvious extension. The strawman and mailing list are already very wide 
in scope, so no, field references may not be discussed here.

I encourage you to start an OpenJDK project about method and field 
references. See http://openjdk.java.net/projects/. The Compiler Group is 
the obvious project sponsor.
