How should a newbie search for information before posting questions?

I am not sure if this is the list to post newbie questions. I do attempt to
work quite a bit before posting a question, but it still means I might be
ending up posting some seemingly silly questions.  Are there any FAQs or
documents I should read upfront ? I have read the state of the lambda, and
generally try to search on the javadocs and list archives and even
stackoverflow, but thats a rather imprecise way of locating information.
Anything other references I should be checking up before posting questions
here?
