Text is terrible on an external monitor and not great on retina either plus two other issues

Hi Phil,

For Issue #2 :
It happens only on non-Retina displays. I have filed JDK-8244402 <https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8244402> for it.

For Issue #3 :
We already have JDK-8242795 <https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8242795>
