I think it involved different things for native. At one point I think it used Cocoa Java for the large preview icons.
I also sort of remember that the filechooser code involved a native jnii lib, maybe once Cocoa Java was no longer supported?
But, I think you are correct in that the dialog isn't completely native, it is java supplemented with native one way or another.
