good platform to build da Vinci on?

Hello,
each time I download a newer da Vinci repository on my (virtual) Ubuntu,
I also get newer build error to chase and adjust. This is becoming
tedious, error-prone and requires too much time. Further, it doesn't
directly contribute to my project which consists in *using* the JVM
extensions to implement a dynamic language on top of the mlvm.
So, rather than insisting with Ubuntu, I'm ready to switch to
(Open)Solaris (32 bits) instead and give up my attempts to build on Linux.
Does anybody have experience with building da Vinci on (Open)Solaris?
Does it goes easily and without troubles? Are there special issues to
take into account?
Thank you all in advance
Raffaello
P.S.
I'd really like to go with FreeBSD but that's a poorly supported
VirtualBox guest. I've a 32 bits Windows host, no hope for more.
