I should have replied to you on this. I did create JDK-8260691 [1] a few 
days ago to eliminate the use of dlsym from the Linux implementation. It 
dates back to when xattr.h could not be relied on to be in the build 
environment. I see Brian Burkhalter has picked it up but I don't know if 
he has done anything on it. I assume you want to start with that one. 
I'll create another issue for the consolidation and reply here with the 
link.
