I've created this RFE for this:
  7070450: (aio) AsynchronousChannelGroup should be usable by custom 
asynchronous channels implementations

This covers investigating whether it makes sense for 
AsynchronousChannelGroup should implement ExecutorService (something 
that Alex or Yevgeny Libman suggested on the -dev list at one point), 
and also investigating where it makes sense to allow 
AsynchronousChannelGroup objects be created without being associated 
with a provider.
