Actually, after having done the Google Calendar control, I'm all fan of coding this in JavaFX. Once you've got a good "operating mode", coding absolute layout is a breeze in JFX. So I would seriously consider JFX, yes.

But that is based on the fact that JFX is from experience a good developer platform to do this in, plus the experience I have in the last 8 years or so of maintaining my hour entry applet. Since I have not investigated WebGL or similar I cannot be sure.

All I can say is that the Swing applet has not caused me much problems, and startup time actually is pretty good, after the initial download when all jars are cached. But of course this is in an professional setting (consumers do not often need to keep track of where they've spent their hours on), so I do not know what I'll run into with all the consumers and their plugins.
