So I'm still puzzling over how to make good use of this.

These two thoughts are what the Flex community is currently pondering in
light of HTML5.  "Why choose Flex [or FXML for that matter] over HTML5?"  I
suspect that real answers won't come to that question, until you do
actually unleash it.  Scott McNealy was fond of saying that "Innovation
happens elsewhere", and the only way to see the fruits of that innovation
is to let someone play with it and see what they come up.
