[Review request] Make Cell.updateItem(item, empty) public, rather than protected

Ah drat - good catch! Well, that takes me back to square one....
We could go with the override invalidate() on Cell.setItem(...), but I
really don't think that is right. I think it'll have to be back to the
drawing board for this one.
