Robert,
with odd numbers, the space might be distributed unevenly (by a pixel), this is due to snapToPixel property of the GridPane. Setting it to false might lead to even distribution, but the border might be blurred.
Anyway, if you are not sure if it is a bug, I would suggest you file a JIRA issue with some sample to reproduce the issue:
