I can see two reasons to consider a larger style:
1. The classic style has fallen out of favor on contemporary macOS applications. In fact, it is quite hard to find even a single example that uses the classic style.
2. The entire point of extended windows is to place controls in the title bar. The classic title bar is too small for that, which is probably why the larger unified styles have become so prevalent.
