It almost seems like there could be historical reasons, like one preceded the other or something like that. But as far as I can see, both media features appear at the [same time](https://www.w3.org/TR/2008/WD-css3-mediaqueries-20081015/) around 2008, and they've been around ever since. So I guess it's mostly convenience.
