A possible feature request: try to intercept the bogus situation (if 
possible), issue a civilized error message (maybe with some stack trace) 
and terminate the VM.

E.g. treat this as an upcall that fails in an unexpected way (e.g. an 
upcall that returns a pointer that is no longer alive).

Would be nice, but not sure if technically feasible.
