P.S.  It is O(N) where N is the size of the value.
Yes, N is very small, almost 1, but it is still thought
to be large compared to the very small cost of
a pointer compare on today's machines.  If we
had one-cycle cache line compares maybe the
trade-off would go elsewhere.
