Roger - glad to see this topic on the mailing lists.

Now while I understand the need to gather requirements I see little 
benefit in doing that in isolation.  Let's be clear - there are not that 
many good candidates to choose from.   Personally I'd rather we 
identified a few candidates and discussed their relative merits.

Also - we need to ensure that other "non functional" aspects of these 
candidates are listed.    Items such as  "pricing", "support costs", 
"hardware requirements",  "size of developer community" , "active 
development", "high quality", "development language", "licence"   etc 
are as important in this consideration as specific functional features.
