Hello,
it appears JLS bug reports are never created. I submitted a report more than 4 months ago on the bug reporting site, and even communicated with one of the JDK members because I had the feeling that I already reported it before and it got lost back then as well. However, I still have not got any confirmation mail that the report was created, nor do I find it on the bug tracker. The review number is 9071615.
I am not blaming you for not having fixed the issue, there are a lot of bug reports and I can understand that you don't have the time to address all of them in a timely manner, or at all. However, I am not very happy about the fact that the report simply vanishes. For other components, e.g. bugs within the JDK, the report is created after a few days or weeks and then stays in status "New" until it is evaluated. There the reporter at least is informed that the report has been created.
Maybe for you JDK maintainers the current behavior is fine (or does not matter) because you can probably see these internal reports and you can directly create reports on the bug tracker, without having to go through the bug reporting site. However, as external reporter this is all rather annoying and frustrating.
Could you please enhance the bug reporting in the following ways?
- Directly after submitting a bug report, send a mail with the review number and the report title; currently one would have to note it down manually
- When the report is resolved in any way (fixed or rejected) send a mail to the reporter; currently one would have to check the report manually
- Optionally: When someone comments on the report send a mail to the reporter; sometimes there is a misunderstanding or the reporter could further explain their rationale
(Maybe also take a look at how bug reporting for other open source projects / companies works; for many of them bugs can be reported directly and the reporter can directly interact with the developers, e.g. through GitHub issues; for Apache everyone can create a Jira account, for JetBrains everyone can create a YouTrack account. Though I guess you have your reasons for not supporting this.)
Kind regards
