Well, we could add a new case to ColorConvertOp's constructor, like

        if (cspace instanceof ICC_ColorSpace) {
        else if (cspace instanceof DirectColorSpace) ...

Ah, okay.  That's rather dubious code, but people do stuff like that.  :-)
