So, the answers are No and Yes. OpenJDK is distributed under various
free software licenses, specifically the GPL, which means there is no
such thing as a "Field of Use" restriction. You are free to use it for
whatever you feel like (if you obey the obligations of passing along
such grants and the source code as the GPL says). And yes, it is used
already in such setups. Jalimo for example has been providing OpenJDK
for a couple of years already for such things as the BeagleBoard, BUG,
OpenMoko, Maemo, the Irex Iliad, etc... It takes some work, but is is
certainly possible:
