Neal, I don't understand. Please explain why Java does not have the 
dangling-else ambiguiaty.

    if (..)
        if (..)
            ...;
    else
        ...;

is in fact:

    if (..) {
        if (..)
            ...;
        else
            ...;
    }

and not:

    if (..) {
        if (..)
            ...;
    }
    else
        ...;
   
Following "solution" should be a compile error:

    if (..)
        if (..)
            ...;
        ;
    else
        ...;
