AFAIK, no speak of live-ness as I think it's not mentioned in JVMS neither.

JVM TI has ClassLoad event and ClassPrepare event and GetClassStatus API 
follow the status defined in JVMS 5: loaded, verified, prepared,

Yes.  A "loaded" class can be of any of the above status.

+1.   JVM TI detects if a given class has been unloaded and returns 
JVMTI_ERROR_INVALID_CLASS that tools can check and handle in the case of 
class unloading.
