Well the plan is still to obsolete 1.8, only it will happen after either
the 1.11 release or the security release, whichever is later.

Others are welcome to continue maintaining 1.8 after this, of course, but
I don't intend to.  We'll have five other branches as it is (1.9, 1.10, 1.11,
2.0, 2.1)!
