I'd suggest starting with a new port and a project proposal on the 
porters-dev mailing list. That's the simplest way to get started.

Are there illumos variants with alternative libc-s? I seem to recall 
that Nexenta used a GNU userland, for example, but I assume it's gone by 
now.
