Please approve the backport of 8161732 to 8u.

Details: 
There was no public review for 8161732 and apologize for the fact that the bug report is not open.
Backport of 8161732 to 8u will prevent several inappropriate NPEs from being thrown from the EDT.

JDK 9 code changes applies as-is to JDK 8 code after copyright date and path changes.
