I usually add a comment to the issue, stating that I'm starting to work on a backport. Once I have the change ready, I change the comment to "Fix Request" which is required by the process anyway. I think that should be quite sufficient to sync the work on backports given that usually not hundreds of folks start working on an issue at the same time.
