I am biased because I was opposed to the changes that are part of IANA
vanguard (along with many other people), and I've already invested
effort into staying on rearguard, and I'm more conservative about
adding new features to old releases. But of course the world has to
migrate to vanguard.

I would choose to keep jdk8 (and jdk7, and jdk6 !) on rearguard
forever, and switch newer ones to vanguard.
If upstream IANA drops support for rearguard, it's probably easy
enough to do it ourselves.
