What's futile is not the discussion per se, but the expectation
doubtless held by some members of this mailing list that the discussion
will be reviewed by EG members and affect their thinking. No-one can
guarantee that EG members will do so. Some JCP members will not look at
any OpenJDK project in any way under any circumstances. The draft Lambda
spec will most likely be the sole starting point for EG discussions.
Options explored on the Lambda list but not incorporated into the draft
spec may have to be independently discovered by EG members.

Anyone can discuss anything within the scope of the project defined at
http://openjdk.java.net/projects/lambda/. By all means question any
aspect of the draft Lambda spec. Just don't expect a guaranteed "Yes,
you're right, it will definitely be done your way" response, because
nothing is definite until the JSR goes final.

Members of this mailing list are encouraged to join the JCP and, when
the time comes, nominate themselves for EG membership for the Lambda
JSR. That is the best way to ensure a thorough EG discussion. I for one
would reproduce the content of the "Summary" mails for EG members.
