Having to reach over to the mouse just slows me down. I am a touch typer,
and one of the applications I use regularly has way more than the 26
letters that would be easily accessible via the accelerators (even 52 --
with the Shift key -- or 51 -- Cmd+H cannot be used -- would be too few).
Besides, it is very convenient if the application does not ask you to
remember all the shortcuts. For example, if I need to access the "Create
Mask" menu entry in the "Selection" menu in the "Edit" menu _a lot_ today
(and maybe tomorrow) but not so often any other time, I really like to get
used to the Alt+E S M incantation _for that day_.
Please understand, however, that I have not the slightest interest in
starting a flamewar about user interface design here. I don't care what
others prefer. I do have my preference and if it is supported on the OS, I
am happy.
So if you have an answer to my original question ("How do I access menus
[not menu entries] quickly via the keyboard?") I would be most grateful.
Ciao,
Johannes
