Running a standard build with X11 front end

James,

   you don't need to make your own build. You can use existing build 
with the X11 front end
on Mac simply by passing parameter -Dawt.toolkit=XToolkit to java.
However be ready that application might work much slower and some
functionality might not work as expected. XToolkit on Mac is not a 
supported option
you can use it on your own risk. Unless it is absolutely necessary i 
suggest to use default toolkit.
